When Bisi walked into the art event he was wearing a sparkling gold lion suit. A smile was impossible to hide when you saw him. For Bisi, music is all about community. Playing music with people and for people is what music is for. It is to be experienced together. One of his most recent collaborations is Mr. Left and Mr. Right.
We all have musicians we love, but becoming a musician isn’t easy. They have had to work incredibly hard to get to where they are. Of all the times I have talked to musical artists about their work they always say that other people don’t understand what it is they do. Parents especially, whether they’re supportive or not, have a difficult time relating to their children’s work and passion.
Our society does support the arts. Growing up, many kids learn an instrument in school and there are plenty of programs that continue to foster their musical knowledge. However, being a full-time musician can be incredibly difficult. Bisi talked to us a bit about his own struggle to become a musician. Among them was simply accepting the fact that he wanted to become one at all. Bisi had to fight the doubt within himself before he could fight the doubt that others may have toward him. When he did he discovered that playing music was one of the best ways to express himself. His parents understood his love for music and knew it was for him.
